THE CHARACTER
Character Name: Connor / RK800
Series: Detroit: Become Human
Canon Point: During the chapter "Crossroads", prior to deviating.
Character Age: Physically it has been 1 month since he was created, although as a programmed android he is designed emulate the appearance, intelligence and mannerisms of someone in their late twenties/early thirties.
Background: Here
Personality:
Connor's personality can be somewhat shaped by the choices he makes over the course of the story, however a few factors remain core aspects of who he is. The most significant of these is his dogged determination - whether a steadfast machine or an empathetic being, Connor is always determined to complete his mission. While he has chances to deviate from his core objective (such as saving his partner at the expense of losing a suspect) doing so is no easy task. It's literally in his programming, he always completes his missions, and without having yet deviated he's still subject to that same core objective - succeed at all costs, no matter the sacrifice. It takes some highly powerful motivation to get him to act outside, or even in contradiction to, whatever his current objective happens to be.
He's also designed to be highly curious. It's a benefit to the job, "first android detective" and all, but it's become a beast of his own undoing by the time Connor is faced with the choice to deviate from his software. He begins his life like this, able to pursue simple diversions from his mission such as observing and saving a fish that has fallen out of the tank, or taking a moment during a high intensity negotiation to look at an ornate statue. Curiosity drives his initial pursuit at a friendship with his human partner, fuels the success of his investigations and interrogations, and as a result contributes heavily to the instabilities in his software that later lead to a possibility of breaking free entirely - the very nature of his programming becomes the programming's downfall, in the end.
For someone designed to be the perfect integration into human life, Connor isn't always very good at it. His conversations are often mechanical, at times betraying the drop down menu nature of his social integration protocol in the stilted nature of his discussions with human. Despite this he's quite a friendly individual, pleasant to be around, and he tries so hard to be liked, sometimes even to the point of detriment. This is seen most clearly in the development of his relationship with his work partner - he frequently asks 'personal questions', pries and pushes, claims to like music he has never heard of, and generally goes above and beyond any required attempt to bond with the human he has been assigned to. Although he doesn't display measures this excessive with any other on screen relationship, it can be related to his status with "Amanda", the AI programmed as a handler of sorts to keep Connor and his potential deviancy at check. The environment itself responds positively when Amanda and Connor are working harmoniously, deteriorating when their relationship sours, and even with unstable software he has the potential to lie to Amanda for the sake of saving that relationship (or protecting himself).
His empathy is ultimately what leads him - at least in this edition - to the cusp of deviation. Over several moments (the fish, saving his partner, not killing several androids) he shows a clear capacity for empathy with other beings, even ones he is not supposed to consider 'alive'. These moments all build to the moment in which he is taken out of canon - with his gun pointed at the leader of the deviants, being asked if he truly is just a machine or in fact a sentient being, capable of independent thought. Although he has yet to follow through with that decision - something interesting in and of itself, as no other android displays a clear choice to remain a machine, although this potentially can be chalked up to the prototypical nature of his model - the fact that there is a decision at all means that he has done the work required. He has become a deviant, realistically, he just needs to accept that for himself.
And now for the fun stuff: Connor's a dork. He expresses an interest in Heavy Metal because his partner likes it, describing it as 'full of energy' - because that's exactly how heavy metal listeners love to be described. He likes dogs despite never having met one, and when he does he's actually a bit intimidated by it, although he's quick to show the dog affection too. He has 'nervous' tics (calibrating with his coin, adjusting his tie, rubbing his hands together) that seem to bear no purpose other than that old chestnut of human integration. He gets frustrated easily by failure, displays immense pleasure at success, and he's far too concerned with the nutritional breakdown of food. All things that make humans not want to integrate, in short. Despite his machine origins, Connor is actually quite a flawed, "human" entity, and with the opportunity to develop that existence it's surely only going to get much more interesting.
Powers/Abilities:
• Analysis - Connor is able to analyse samples in real time, including bodily fluids (on his tongue. it's gross) as well as reconstruct events at a crime scene based on clues. This requires access to a database of some kind to cross reference samples against.
• Improved strength - it's not demonstrated exactly how much stronger than humans androids are (depending on the game choices Connor can destroy the shit out of a person or get his ass kicked) but it's clear that they possess some level of heightened strength, agility and stamina due to the nature of them being literal robots.
Power Nerfs (if applicable): His detective-type powers would be limited to whatever he can access in this world, I would imagine, so any caps related to that are welcome. Beyond that his abilities are all within reasonable limits, although if specifications need to be put on the mumblemumble improved strength area that's more than acceptable!
Inventory:
• Cyberlife outfit - shirt/pants/branded jacket!
• His coin!
• Nothing else because he's a tragedy!
Incentives: At this stage Connor's main incentive is still to stop the leader of the deviants, however due to the pivotal nature of his canon point he would at this point simply ask to fully understand it - from the nature of its origins right through to how, if necessary, it could be stopped.
